Why only these states

We add a state only when its insurance department publishes company-level market share data free on its official site, and the site’s terms don’t limit reuse to noncommercial purposes. Lapidar is a commercial product, so we hold ourselves to that.

  • California publishes its full market share report and insurer detail file free, and the department’s site policy treats its content as public domain unless otherwise indicated. We still show only a short factual summary (the top ten groups and their shares) with a prominent citation, and link to the report for everything else.
  • Ohio publishes free group-level tables (top 70 groups for total P&C, private passenger auto and homeowners) with its annual market share report. We found no terms on the department’s site that limit reuse, and the figures are public facts from a state agency, so we show the same short summary: top ten groups and shares, with a citation. We could not find the department’s prior-year tables online, so the Ohio page has no year-on-year change.
  • Texas publishes top-25 group tables in its annual market conditions report, but the department’s site grants permission to copy its information for noncommercial use and none for commercial use. We link to it instead of republishing it.
  • North Carolina’s state web terms likewise grant permission for noncommercial use and none for commercial use, so it isn’t included.
  • New York and Wisconsin grant permission to copy their sites’ information for noncommercial use only. Michigan’s state site terms forbid copying without written permission, and Pennsylvania’s state site reserves all rights without a reuse grant. None of them is included.
  • Washington publishes a top-10 group table, but its pages carry an NAIC copyright notice with all rights reserved, so we treat it as NAIC data and leave it out.
  • Illinois, Oregon, Colorado, Virginia and Minnesota publish insurer-level figures without group totals, as far as we could check. Building groups ourselves would mean adding our own grouping to the department’s data, so we don’t. Massachusetts publishes only a home insurance report. Georgia and Arizona: we found no group-level market share publication. Florida: we could not reach the regulator’s site to check.

Nationwide figures by state are sold by the NAIC under license terms that don’t fit a public commercial page, so we don’t use them. The California and Ohio departments compile their reports from insurers’ annual statement filings in the NAIC database; we use the departments’ published reports, not NAIC products.

Methodology

  • The measure is direct written premium: premium written in the state before reinsurance, as reported by insurers and published by the department.
  • Rankings are by insurance group, as the department groups insurers; an insurer outside any group appears on its own.
  • We show the top ten groups for all P&C lines combined and, where the same report breaks them out, for private passenger auto and homeowners.
  • Shares are calculated from the department’s insurer detail file and checked against the department’s own totals and published rankings before a page is built.
  • Change vs prior year uses the department’s previous report for the same group code.
  • Each state page states its source, report year and the date we retrieved it.

Reconciling statements is the hard part.

Every carrier formats its statements differently, and the lines rarely match your records on the first pass. Lapidar, commission reconciliation software for independent agencies, is in its founding pilot: open an account, subscribe when you’re ready.
