Key figures

  • Insurers wrote $5.1 billion of homeowners multiple peril premium (Line 4) in Ohio in 2025, 19.3% of the department’s total for property and casualty lines ($26.4 billion).
  • State Farm Group was the largest homeowners writer with 21.22% of the market, about 1.75 times the premium of the second largest, Allstate Insurance Group (12.12%). State Farm’s homeowners share was larger than that of numbers three, four and five combined (20.56%).
  • The five largest groups wrote 53.90% of Ohio homeowners premium and the ten largest 75.29%. Each of the top ten wrote more than $200 million.
  • American Family Insurance Group, USAA Group and Auto-Owners Group are in the homeowners top ten but not in the top ten for all P&C lines combined; Progressive Group, Berkshire Hathaway Group and Travelers Group are in the all-lines top ten but not in the homeowners top ten.

What these figures are not. Written premium is dollars, not policies, and the report does not count policies. Market share is a share of premium; it says nothing about whether coverage is available to a given homeowner, at what price, or where in the state. This is one year: the department’s prior-year tables are no longer online, so this page shows no change over time.

What this means for independent agencies

Market share measures premium, not access. Some of the largest homeowners groups sell mainly through their own agents or directly to consumers, so a group’s size says nothing on its own about whether it appoints independent agencies. A group is also several insurance companies, and commission statements usually run per company.

Methodology

  • Source and year. The Ohio Department of Insurance’s 2025 Property and Casualty Insurance Market Share Report and its table of the top 70 groups for homeowners multiple peril, calendar year 2025, built from the NAIC annual statement database as of June 23, 2026.
  • Measure. Direct written premium on Line 4, homeowners multiple peril, before reinsurance, by insurance group as the department groups insurers.
  • Checks. The 70 listed groups plus the department’s “others” line add up to its homeowners total of $5,099,703,637, the top 15 match the full report to the dollar, and our shares agree with the department’s rounded shares. In the homeowners table the department’s “others” line is negative (−$2,082,201), so the 70 listed groups add up to slightly more than the market total; we use the department’s total as published.
  • Scope. We show the top ten groups only, as a short factual summary of the department’s table.
  • No causes. The report gives figures, not reasons. This page does not explain why shares are what they are.

We found no terms on the department’s site that limit reuse; the tables note that they are based on the NAIC database. We publish only factual figures from the department’s report, with citation. Reconciling statements is the hard part.

Ten groups wrote 75.29% of Ohio homeowners premium in 2025, and each sends its own commission statements. Lapidar checks them against your book and lists missing, short and duplicate commission. See a sample report.
