Commercial auto insurance

Commercial auto insurance covers vehicles owned or used by a business, including liability for injuries and property damage they cause, and its premium moves during the term as vehicles and drivers are added or removed.

What it means

The NAIC glossary defines commercial auto as “coverage for motor vehicles owned by a business engaged in commerce that protects the insured against financial loss because of legal liability for motor vehicle-related injuries, or damage to the property of others caused by accidents arising out of the ownership, maintenance, use, or care-custody & control of a motor vehicle.”

Commercial auto is written as its own policy, not inside a BOP.

How it shows on a commission statement

The line to watch is the endorsement. Each vehicle or driver added or removed produces additional or return premium, and the commission on it follows at the rate the carrier applies to endorsements. On an active fleet that means several small lines a month, each easy to miss and each one a place for a short payment or an unexpected chargeback. Our guide on commission on mid-term endorsements covers how to check them. Some fleet policies are rated on reported mileage or receipts and adjusted by audit; see commission on premium audits.

Example

Example data: invented fleet endorsements in one month.

The driver endorsement shows on the policy but has no commission line on the statement; the $30.00 at the policy’s rate is the question to ask. Commission rates on this page are invented; your agency agreement and commission schedule set the real ones.

Common mistakes to check

  • Checking only the renewal and not the run of mid-term endorsements on a fleet.
  • Missing an endorsement that appears in the agency system but never on a statement.
  • Treating a vehicle-removed chargeback as an error when the return premium is correct.

Questions

How do endorsements affect commission on commercial auto?

Adding a vehicle or driver usually adds premium and commission; removing one returns premium and takes commission back. Each is its own statement line.

Is commercial auto covered by a BOP?

No. Commercial auto is a separate policy.

Why is my commercial auto commission different every month?

On an active fleet, vehicles and drivers change during the term, and each change produces its own additional or return premium line.
