Continuing education for agents
Continuing education (CE) for insurance agents is the set of state-approved courses and hours a licensed producer must complete in each license period to renew the license; a producer who misses CE can lose the license, and with it the right to be paid commission.
What it means
Each state sets its own CE rules. Washington’s statute, RCW 48.17.150, is short: “The commissioner shall by rule establish minimum continuing education requirements for the renewal or reissuance of a license to an insurance producer.” Hours, ethics requirements and deadlines are set in the state’s rules, and a producer with nonresident licenses usually meets CE through the home state.
What it means for commission: CE is a condition for keeping the license, and the license is a condition for being paid. Washington’s RCW 48.17.490 bars paying commission to a person who is required to be licensed and is not. A lapsed license can also end a producer’s appointments, and NIPR notes the NPN is used in continuing education tracking. Selling on a lapsed license is also an errors and omissions exposure for the agency.
How it shows on a commission statement
CE does not appear on statements. Its effect does when a license lapses: a carrier may stop paying on business written by that producer, or terminate the appointment, and the statement simply stops listing new business from them.
In reconciliation, and what Lapidar does
Lapidar does not track licenses or CE. It reports policies in your book that were due a payment and were not paid; a lapsed license is one possible reason to look for behind such a finding.
Example
| Producer | License renews | CE hours due / done | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| EX-P01 | March | 24 / 24 | Complete |
| EX-P02 | June | 24 / 15 | Due in 8 months |
| EX-P03 | November | 24 / 6 | At risk |
Common mistakes to check
- Tracking CE by producer memory instead of a shared list with renewal dates.
- Forgetting that ethics or line-specific hours may be required on top of general hours.
- Letting a home-state license lapse, which can affect every nonresident license.
Questions
How many CE hours does an insurance agent need?
It depends on the state and the license; each state sets hours, ethics requirements and the renewal period. Check your state insurance department.
What happens if an insurance agent misses continuing education?
The license may not be renewed or may lapse, and in many states an unlicensed person may not be paid commission for selling.
Does continuing education transfer between states?
Nonresident licenses usually rely on the home state’s CE compliance, but rules differ; check each state.
