# Supplemental commission

A supplemental commission is an extra commission percentage a carrier pays on top of the base rate, fixed before the year starts and based on the agency’s past results with that carrier. Unlike a contingent commission, it is known at the time of sale and is usually paid as a percentage of each eligible policy’s premium.

## What it means

Supplemental programs spread in the mid-2000s as an alternative to contingent commissions. Business Insurance reported in 2007 that The Hartford “will pay a fixed commission, set prior to the sale of a particular insurance policy, that is based on the agent or broker’s past performance” ([source](https://www.businessinsurance.com/hartford-the-latest-to-offer-supplementals-as-replacement-for-contingent-commiss/)).

How it works: the carrier looks back at an agency’s results for a prior period and sets an extra percentage for the coming one. That percentage is then added to eligible policies as they are written or renewed. Which lines qualify, the look-back period and the formula are set in each carrier’s program, and they differ widely.

## How it shows on a commission statement

Some carriers fold the supplemental into the rate on each line, so a 15% base shows as 16.5%. Others print it as a separate column or a separate line under the same policy, sometimes on a separate statement. If your expected rates come from the base schedule alone, every eligible policy looks overpaid; if the supplemental stops at a new program year and nobody notices, every policy is quietly short.

## Example

Supplemental on one renewal · EX-41207Example data

**Renewal premium**
$4,000.00

**Base commission, 15%**
$600.00

**Supplemental for this program year, example 1.5%**
$60.00

**Expected total commission**
$660.00

**Paid on statement**
$600.00

Example terms. Here the supplemental is missing: $60.00 short, worth checking against the carrier’s program letter for the year.

## Commonly confused

- **Contingent commission** is calculated after the year, from results that year, and paid as a lump sum; a supplemental is set beforehand from past results and usually paid per policy. See [contingent commission](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/contingent-commission/).
- **Override commission** is paid to an agency or network above you on business you write; a supplemental is paid to you. See [override commission](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/override-commission/).
- A **commission schedule** sets the base rate; the supplemental sits on top of it. See [commission schedule](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/commission-schedule/).

## Common mistakes to check

- Expecting only the base rate, so supplemental lines look like overpayments or duplicates.
- Not updating expected rates when a new program year changes the supplemental percentage.
- Missing that a line of business is excluded from the program, and expecting a supplemental on it.
- Passing the supplemental to producers, or not, without the producer agreement saying which.

## Questions

### What is the difference between contingent and supplemental commission?

A contingent commission is calculated after the year from that year’s results, such as profit or growth, and paid as a lump sum. A supplemental commission is set before the year from past results and usually added to each eligible policy as it is written.

### How do I know my supplemental rate?

From the carrier’s program notice or agency portal for the program year. Use that rate, not the base schedule, as the expected rate on eligible lines.
