# Nonrenewal

Nonrenewal means a policy is not continued past its expiration date. It differs from cancellation, which ends a policy before expiration. Carriers must usually give written notice in advance, and the required period varies by state and line. For an agency, a nonrenewal ends renewal commission on that policy unless it is replaced.

## What it means

The Texas Department of Insurance [explains](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/home-insurance-canceled-or-not-renewed.html) for homeowners policies: “Nonrenewal means your company is not continuing (renewing) your policy after your policy’s end date,” while “Cancellation means your company will stop your policy before its end date.” The same page says the company “must give you 60 days’ notice of a nonrenewal if you bought or renewed your policy in 2024.”

How it works: a carrier may nonrenew because of losses, a change in appetite or leaving a line or region; an insured may simply not renew. The notice periods, permitted reasons and delivery rules are set by each state and differ by line, so the Texas rule above is one example, not a national standard.

## How it shows on a commission statement

A nonrenewal usually shows as nothing at all: the renewal line you expected never arrives. That looks the same as a renewal the carrier failed to pay you on. Check whether a nonrenewal notice was issued; if not, the policy may have renewed under another agency code or still be owed.

## Example

**Example data: invented expirations checked against the renewal month’s statement.**

| Policy | Expiration | Renewal on statement | Nonrenewal notice |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| EX-55102 | Mar 1 | yes | none |
| EX-55117 | Mar 1 | no | yes |
| EX-55129 | Mar 1 | no | none |

Only the highlighted policy needs a query: it has no renewal line and no nonrenewal notice, so the commission may be unpaid.

## Commonly confused

- **Cancellation** ends a policy mid-term and can trigger a chargeback; nonrenewal ends it at expiration with nothing to charge back. See [pro rata cancellation](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/pro-rata-cancellation/).
- A **lapse** for non-payment of the renewal premium is different from a carrier’s decision not to renew.
- A **policy rewrite** replaces a policy with a new one, which can look like a nonrenewal on the old number. See [policy rewrite](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/policy-rewrite/).

## Common mistakes to check

- Assuming every missing renewal line is a nonrenewal.
- Missing a renewal that moved to a new policy number or agency code.
- Applying one state’s notice period to policies in another state.

## Questions

### What is the difference between nonrenewal and cancellation?

Nonrenewal ends a policy at its expiration date; cancellation ends it before then. Notice periods and allowed reasons differ for each and are set by state law.

### How much notice must an insurer give for nonrenewal?

It depends on the state and the line. Texas, for example, sets 30 or 60 days for homeowners policies depending on when the policy was bought or renewed, according to its Department of Insurance. Check the rules of the state where the policy is written.

### Is commission charged back on a nonrenewal?

Not normally, because the term was completed and the premium earned. Commission simply stops at expiration, though a final audit on the last term can still produce a negative line. A cancellation before expiration is what usually triggers a chargeback.
