# Named insured

The named insured is the person or business identified as the insured in the policy, usually on the declarations page. It holds the main rights under the policy; on commercial policies the first named insured usually handles cancellation and return premium. On commission statements the name is a matching key, and a spelling or entity change can break the match.

By Lapidar, the team building it · October 13, 2026 · Also called first named insured; policyholder (often used loosely)

## What it means

The NAIC’s [glossary of insurance terms](https://content.naic.org/glossary-insurance-terms) defines the named insured as “the individual defined as the insured in the policy contract,” and an insured more broadly as the “party(ies) covered by an insurance policy.”

How it works: the named insured appears on the [declarations page](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/declarations-page/). Many commercial policies list a first named insured who receives notices and return premium. Others can be covered without being named, for example employees or additional insureds added by [endorsement](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/endorsement/). Exactly what rights each has is set by the policy wording and state law.

## How it shows on a commission statement

Carriers print the named insured on each statement line, often truncated or in their own format: “Smith Plumbing LLC” may arrive as “SMITH PLUMB”. A change of entity, such as a sole proprietor forming an LLC, can create a new policy number and a new line that no longer matches the old record. Match on policy number first and use the name as a check.

## Example

**Example data: invented statement names matched to the agency record.**

| Statement name | Agency record | Policy | Match |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| SMITH PLUMB | Smith Plumbing LLC | EX-53021 | yes, by policy number |
| J SMITH DBA SMITH | Smith Plumbing LLC | EX-53088 | check: old entity |

The second line is the policy before the business became an LLC. It may be a final audit or a return premium on the old policy, not a duplicate.

## Commonly confused

- An **additional insured** is added by endorsement and does not hold the named insured’s rights.
- A **certificate holder** only receives evidence of coverage. See [certificate of insurance](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/certificate-of-insurance/).
- The **agent of record** is the agency on the policy, not the insured. See [agent of record](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/agent-of-record/).

## Common mistakes to check

- Matching statement lines on name alone and missing truncated or reformatted names.
- Treating a line under a former entity name as a duplicate.
- Leaving the agency record unchanged after the named insured changes.

## Questions

### What is the difference between the named insured and an additional insured?

The named insured is identified in the policy as the insured and holds the main rights under it. An additional insured is added, usually by endorsement, for specific coverage and generally has fewer rights.

### What is a first named insured?

On policies with several named insureds, the first one listed. Commercial policies often give the first named insured duties such as receiving notices and return premium; the policy wording sets the details.
