# Declarations page

A declarations page, or dec page, is the summary at the front of an insurance policy. It lists the named insured, policy number, policy period, covered property or operations, limits, deductibles and premium. For an agency it is the record a commission statement line should match: same policy number, same term, same premium.

## What it means

The NAIC’s [glossary of insurance terms](https://content.naic.org/glossary-insurance-terms) defines declarations as “policy statements regarding the applicant and property covered such as demographic and occupational information, property specifications and expected mileage per year.”

How it works: the carrier issues a declarations page with every new policy and renewal, and usually a revised one with each [endorsement](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/endorsement/) that changes coverage or premium. The rest of the policy, the forms and endorsements, says what is covered; the dec page says for whom, for how long and for how much. Which items must appear can depend on the line and the state.

## How it shows on a commission statement

A commission statement line carries the same keys as the dec page: policy number, insured name, effective date and premium. When the premium on the statement differs from the current dec page, look for an endorsement, an audit or a rewrite that the statement reflects and your agency management system does not, or the reverse.

## Example

**Example data: invented dec page fields checked against the statement line.**

| Field | Dec page | Statement |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Policy number | EX-52310 | EX-52310 |
| Policy period | 01/01 to 01/01 | 01/01 to 01/01 |
| Premium | $4,800.00 | $4,200.00 |
| Commission at 12% | $576.00 | $504.00 |

The statement used a premium $600 lower than the current dec page. Either a mid-term change has not reached one side, or commission was paid on the wrong premium.

## Commonly confused

- An **endorsement** changes the policy; a new dec page often records the result. See [endorsement](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/endorsement/).
- A **certificate of insurance** summarizes coverage for a third party and cannot change it. See [certificate of insurance](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/certificate-of-insurance/).
- An **insurance binder** is temporary evidence of coverage before the policy, and its dec page, is issued. See [insurance binder](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/insurance-binder/).

## Common mistakes to check

- Reconciling against the original dec page after later endorsements changed the premium.
- Keying the policy number from the quote instead of the issued dec page.
- Ignoring policy fees or taxes listed on the dec page that are not commissionable.

## Questions

### What is on an insurance declarations page?

Usually the named insured, policy number, policy period, covered property, vehicles or operations, limits, deductibles and premium. The exact items vary by line of business and carrier.

### Is the declarations page the same as the policy?

No. It is part of the policy, the summary at the front. The coverage forms and endorsements attached to it set out what is covered and excluded.

### Why does the premium on my commission statement differ from the dec page?

Often because of a change made after the dec page was issued, such as an endorsement, audit or cancellation, or because fees on the dec page are not commissionable. If none of those explains it, query the carrier.
