# Book transfer

A book transfer, often called a book roll, is the move of a block of policies from one carrier to another or from one agency to another, usually at renewal, under agreements that decide who is paid commission on the moved policies and when.

## What it means

IA Magazine’s [Practical Advice for Performing a Book Roll](https://www.iamagazine.com/2026/09/01/practical-advice-for-performing-a-book-roll/) defines it plainly: “A book roll occurs when an agency transfers policies from one carrier to another or moves business from one agency to another.” The same article notes that “[a] larger book with one carrier may qualify the agency for higher commission levels or better growth opportunities.” Big “I” Virtual University’s [Book Roll Handbook](https://www.independentagent.com/vu_resource/book-roll-handbook/) covers the process and the errors and omissions exposure.

How it works: in a carrier roll, the agency moves eligible policies to a new carrier as each renews, often under a roll program with its own terms. In an agency transfer, policies move to a new agency through a sale, a producer leaving, or [broker of record letters](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/broker-of-record-letter/), and the carrier changes the [agent of record](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/agent-of-record/).

### Why it matters for agency commissions

During a transfer, commission can land in the wrong place or nowhere. Policies moved between agencies may keep paying under the old code for a statement or two; rolled policies may be paid at a new-business or roll rate rather than the renewal rate the agency expected. A list of every moved policy with its expected carrier, code and rate is the only way to check that each one was paid once, to the right agency.

Book transfers often follow a [carrier termination](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/carrier-termination/), when the agency moves policies to carriers it still represents, or form part of an [agency perpetuation plan](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/agency-perpetuation-plan/) when ownership changes.

On a checked statement

The sample report shows how a statement check marks lines like this one: missing, underpaid, charged back or paid twice, each set against the expected amount. Example data, no account needed. ## How it shows on a commission statement

On a carrier roll, expect cancellation or nonrenewal lines at the old carrier and new-business or roll lines at the new one, policy by policy. On an agency transfer, the policies should drop off the old agency’s statements and appear on the new agency’s at the transfer date.

## Example

**Example data: three invented policies in a carrier roll.**

| Old policy | New carrier status | Premium | Rate | Commission |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| EX-77101 | Rolled, paid | 1,500.00 | 13% | 195.00 |
| EX-77102 | Rolled, paid | 2,100.00 | 13% | 273.00 |
| EX-77103 | Rolled, not on statement | 1,900.00 | — | — |
| Total | | 5,500.00 | | 468.00 |

One rolled policy issued at the new carrier but was not paid; at 13%, $247.00 is outstanding. Commission rates on this page are invented; your agency agreement and commission schedule set the real ones.

## Common mistakes to check

- Not keeping a list of moved policies, so missing payments can’t be found.
- Expecting the renewal rate on rolled policies the new carrier treats as new business.
- Missing commission still paid under the old agency’s code after a transfer.

## Questions

### What is a book roll in insurance?

Moving a block of policies from one carrier to another, or from one agency to another, usually as each policy renews.

### How does a book roll affect commission?

Rolled policies may be paid at a new-business, roll or renewal rate depending on the carrier’s program, and a bigger book with one carrier can raise commission levels.

### Who gets paid on policies during an agency book transfer?

The agency the carrier recognizes as agent of record on the policy at the time, under the transfer and agency agreements.
