# Advanced commission

Advanced commission is commission a carrier pays an agent before it is earned, most often a large share of first-year commission on a life or health policy paid at issue. If the policy lapses or cancels within the carrier’s chargeback period, the unearned part of the advance is taken back, usually from later commission.

## What it means

The opposite arrangement is “as earned”: commission arrives as the insured pays each premium. An advance pays much of it up front instead. Ellen Lichtenstein, writing for AgentSync in Insurance Journal on [commission clawbacks](https://www.insurancejournal.com/blogs/agentsync/2024/02/07/759723.htm), notes that carriers sometimes pay commission before a sale is final, on “a deal that appears very likely to close but hasn’t quite yet,” and reclaim it if it falls through. An advance applies the same idea to premiums not yet paid.

How it works: the advance is a balance the agent owes until the premiums it rests on have been paid. Each month the insured pays, part of the advance becomes earned. If the policy lapses early, the carrier charges back what is still unearned. How much is advanced, how long the chargeback period runs, and whether interest or a reserve applies are set in the contract with the carrier or the agency above you.

## How it shows on a commission statement

Look for three kinds of line: the advance itself, often marked “adv” or with the advance percentage; monthly lines where premium is paid but little or no commission arrives because the advance already covered it; and chargebacks, sometimes netted against new advances so that the statement total hides them. Some carriers print a running advance balance; many do not, and you have to keep it yourself.

## Example

Advance on an invented life policy · EX-38120Example data

**Annual target premium**
$1,800.00

**First-year commission at an example 80%**
$1,440.00

**Advanced at issue, 75% of first-year commission**
$1,080.00

**Policy lapses after 3 monthly premiums: earned so far (3/12 of $1,440)**
$360.00

**Unearned advance charged back**
−$720.00

All rates are example data. The real advance percentage, earning method and chargeback period come from your contract. Some carriers earn the advance over its own months instead; the result differs.

## Commonly confused

- **Earned vs. unearned commission** in property and casualty follows premium over the term; an advance is a deliberate up-front payment with its own repayment terms. See [earned vs. unearned commission](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/earned-vs-unearned-commission/).
- **Commission chargeback** is the reversal itself; the advance is what creates the exposure to it. See [commission chargeback](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/commission-chargeback/).
- **Installment billing** pays commission as each installment posts, the as-earned pattern. See [installment billing](https://getlapidar.com/glossary/installment-billing/).

## Common mistakes to check

- Treating an advance as earned income and spending it before the chargeback period ends.
- Not tracking the advance balance, so a netted chargeback goes unnoticed in the statement total.
- Accepting a chargeback for the full advance when some months of premium were already paid.
- Passing an advance through to a producer with no matching clawback term in the producer agreement.

## Questions

### What is the difference between advanced and as-earned commission?

Advanced commission pays a large part of first-year commission when the policy issues; as-earned pays it as each premium is paid. An advance brings cash sooner but can be charged back if the policy lapses early.

### How long is a chargeback period on advanced commission?

It is set by the contract with the carrier or upline, and varies. Read the contract rather than relying on a typical number.
